North Idaho is a great place to live!
writes, "Leave no doubt, the word is out about North Idaho.

And this is the good word, one that has nothing to do with Superfunds or Aryans or even famous potatoes, for that matter.

What they're saying, in words and actions, is that this is a great place to call home and visit.

You want some evidence?
"

Let's start at Silver Mountain, where 80 percent of the new condos at the resort's Morning Star Lodge under construction were sold last week during the initial offering of the units being built at the base of the gondola.

That goes along with the red-hot real estate market in the Silver Valley, where homes are being snapped up as well as commercial property.

And Silver Mountain, by the way, was named one of "Skiing's Biggest Secrets" in the January issue of Ski Magazine.

"After six years of hard work, getting approvals, planning and designing, Silver Mountain has just made the first step in a rapid transition from a vision to an all-season reality," said Brian Rhodes, the resort's general manager.

Coeur d'Alene received its own bit of recognition lately.

This week, USA Today named the Lake City as number five on its list of "The Top 10 Best Emerging Cities."

It had this to say about Coeur d'Alene: "Beautiful mountain setting" only 20 miles east of Spokane, but "growth and crowding are having an impact."

Well said.

One resident called this "the greatest town in the world. Greatest people in the world, great attitude."

We won't argue with that.

And there's Sandpoint. In January, the community of 7,500 was named by Sunset magazine as the "No. 1 Small Town To Live in" in the western United States.

Sandpoint's history, scenic beauty and setting on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille are all highlighted in the article. The author also noted how the town rallied to save the Panida Theater, and wrote, "As if Sandpoint residents are already fortunate, they also make their own luck."

Yes, they do.

There's also more recent success stories.

The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, The Club at Black Rock and Circling Raven, a resort-class course owned by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, were recently recognized in national golf publications for being among the top courses in the country.

Companies like Buck Knives, Sysco Corp. and Empire Airlines are planning major developments in North Idaho that will bring hundreds of jobs.

The list could go on.

North Idaho's reputation has weathered the questionable rise and resounding fall of the Aryan Nations.

It has faced off with EPA over Superfund status.

This area will continue to thrive.

But the very things that attract people here -- the natural beauty, the friendliness, the small-town feeling and affordable but climbing real estate -- are the very things threatened by growth.

We must, however, note with pride that this area is being recognized more and more for what it really is -- a great place to live.
