KELLOGG -- The Kellogg School District board of trustees approved the recommendations of the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the supplemental levy amount at their meeting on Tuesday evening. Dwight Hoeck, the Citizen's Advisory Co-Chairman, recommended the board approve running a two-year supplemental levy on Tuesday, May 4, for the amount of $998,703. Included in this recommendation is total support of programs funded by current levy funding, support of the school resource officer by providing funding for half the salary for that position and support of an all-day kindergarten program, and two full-time AmeriCorps Volunteers at the Silver Valley Alternative School. The committee also recommended the support of mandated accreditation issues, including hiring two additional part-time assistants to work under the Kellogg Middle School media specialist Mary Lou Cobb and making her the district media specialist, hiring a half-day certified computer teacher at KMS to replace the teaching assistant, and hiring a full-day elementary computer teacher to replace the teaching assistant. To help support a four-year rotation of technology equipment in the school district, the committee recommended utilizing $126,160 of Federal Forest monies each year to help upgrade the district's computer equipment. Stephanie Broadus, the other co-chairman for the committee, said Monday evening's Citizen's Advisory Committee meeting was very successful. "Things that are going on are pretty positive," said Board Chairman Bob Stovern. "The alternative school met and surpassed our expectations, and we will be getting the full-day kindergarten." Board member Mark Schram asked if the supplemental levy would cause an increase in taxes for the patrons of the district. Hoeck said he believed this levy amount would be slightly less than the current rate. KSD Business Manager Terry Rinaldi confirmed this, saying, even though the amount of the levy would increase $19,437 from the last levy, approval of the levy would slightly decrease taxes for KSD patrons. "Lots of hard work went into keeping the levy amount under one million dollars," said Board Member Brian Morgan. "It was a very difficult task to keep below that, but the committee was able to do it and keep the levy on a positive note." Stovern also said if programs are cut, it is hard to put them back in, and they often cost the district more money in the long run. Schram said he was happy with the committee's recommendations and that they were able to make small improvements in the district, but keep the price down.
